The Bling Ring (2013)

Ring around the dollar is what primarily made up the heist group "the bling ring", who were real life fame-obsessed teenagers in Hollywood which burglarized the homes of celebrities Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Audrina Partridge, and others. Writer-Director Sofia Coppola decided to break in and construct the flick "The Bling Ring" based on those events. Coppola definitely delivers her message on the melancholic state of what teens will do to be popular; but in a bling, I mean blink, of an eye one can tell where this movie was heading which unfortunately diminished its potential creativity. The movie stars Katie Chang as Rebecca, who you can call as close as the mastermind (and I use that term loosely) of the bling ring and uses others to assist her. One of Rebecca's manipulative targets and fellow bling-ringer is Marc, the new boy in Tinsletown whose low vanity self-esteem leads him to Rebecca's bling brinx jobs. Emma Watson co-stars as the shallow bling-ringer Nikki, who joins in on the jobs due to her obsession to master the fame game. Nikki''s mother, played by Leslie Mann, is an avid fan of "The Secret" philosophies; and by the hypocritical way Laurie presents them, this "Secret" is not strong enough for a man or a woman. The (as we Cubans call it) plasticas that make up the rest of the ring are Chloe, Sam, and Emily. Coppola's screenplay did have some intriguing messages about the culture of fame, but they were a bit "lost in translation" on how the characters represented them. There was not one performance in the movie that captivated me, I felt I was robbed of thespian deliverance. I will continue to be a supporter of Coppola pictures, but in this one Sofia gave me an offer that I wish I had refused.
